Congratulations on Your Registration, Joyee!
Join us in congratulating Joyee Kwan on achieving her architectural registration with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB).
This is a significant milestone in any architect's career, and we're incredibly proud to have Joyee on our team. We can't wait to see her continued success and the positive impact she'll make.
To celebrate this achievement, we asked Joyee a few questions about her journey.
1. What made you go for registration?
I have been practicing for almost 10 years now, receiving my registration is proof of all the lessons I’ve learned and is certification of my skillset. Also, without being registered, I couldn’t legally call myself an “Architect” because the title is legally protected.
2. What was the hardest part?
Going back to the “study life.” I had to put together a 15000-word case study and study for a 3-hr exam – hard to commit to the student life again while working full time!
3. Does work feel different now?
My day to day is similar, but now I’m practicing with a little more confidence gained from my studies and knowing that I have a qualification backing my skills.
4. What part of the journey surprised you the most?
That I ended up enjoying the process because while studying, I learned a lot that you wouldn’t otherwise on the job, things to do with contracts and legal issues. I feel like it makes me better at my job.
5. Any advice for others thinking about it?
I was always told to start the registration process early and get it done asap. But doing it later in my career worked out well for me - because of my experience, I knew what I was reading about and things I learned applied directly to what I was doing at work. As a result, I felt that the registration process directly contributed to my everyday practice. When you are just starting out a lot of things are only learned in theory, so it is much harder to understand what you’re reading about. It’s never too late and getting registered later in your career makes it easier.
